Description
Installation & Cabling (Continued)
1. If desired, affix the included rack mounting brackets to the DA
and mount the unit in a standard 19" rack.
2. Connect a VGA to UXGA source to the DA; either to the RGB
Input 15-pin HD connector or to the RGB Input BNC
connectors. See the drawing at right to connect video to the
BNC connectors.
3. If desired, connect a local monitor to the DA’s Buffered
Loop-Through 15-pin HD connector.
4. Connect a balanced or unbalanced stereo or mono audio input
to the DA; either to the Audio Inputs 3.5 mm mini jack or to the
Audio Inputs 5-pole,
3.5 mm captive
screw connector.
See the drawing at
right to wire a captive
screw connector for
the appropriate input
type.
5. If you want the FOX 500 DA6 to pass
serial command signals, such as serial
control of projectors for example, connect the host device to the DA and the slave
device to the receivers via three poles of the RS-232 Over Fiber captive screw
connectors on all units.
N The serial return channel (receiver-to-DA) is only implemented for the
receiver connected to output 1.
N For RS-232 responses (receiver-to-DA), you must install fiber cable Optical 2.
6. For serial control of the DA and connected receivers,
connect a host device to either the DA or the receiver
connected to DA output 1 via three poles of the Remote
RS-232/Alarm captive screw connectors.
N Alternatively, you can connect to either unit’s front
panel Configuration port.
7. For remote monitoring of the status of fiber optic link
Optical 2 from the receiver connected to output 1, connect a
locally constructed or obtained device to the two Alarm poles of
the DA’s Remote RS-232/Alarm 5-pole captive screw connector.
The two pins are shorted together when no light link is detected.
8. Connect 1 or 2 fiber optic cables between the DA and each receiver. See the
figure at right, note that the cables cross.
N Optical 2 is functional only for output 1.
N Ensure that you use the proper fiber cable for your transmitter/receiver
pair. Typically, singlemode fiber has a yellow jacket and multimode cable
has an orange jacket.
N Only one fiber optic cable, Optical 1, is required for video, audio, and
serial command transmission. But, if you connect only one fiber optic
cable, you will not receive RS-232 reports from the controlled device,
and there will be reduced front panel and RS-232 command functionality.
To receive responses from the controlled device and for full functionality,
you need to install both fiber optic cables.
9. If desired, connect a control system or computer to the front panel
Configuration (RS-232) port. Use an optional 9-pin D to 2.5 mm mini jack TRS
RS-232 cable, part #70-335-01.
10. On each receiver, connect 1 or 2 RGBHV, RGBS, RGsB, or RsGsBs video
displays.
11. On each receiver, connect 1 or 2 balanced or unbalanced stereo or mono
audio devices to the receiver; to the Audio Outputs 3.5 mm mini jack and/or
to the Audio Outputs 5-pole, 3.5 mm captive screw connector. See below to
wire the receiver’s captive screw connector for the appropriate output type.
C Connect the sleeve to ground (Gnd). Connecting the sleeve to a
negative (-) terminal will damage the audio output circuits.
12. Connect power to all units.
Power LED — Indicates that power is connected to that unit.
RGB, Audio, Link 1, and Link 2 LEDs — Indicate that the associated input is detected.
N The DA detects RGB, Audio, and Link 2 and reports their status to all receivers.
The receiver connected to DA output 1 detects Link 1 and reports its status to the DA (if the
Optical 2 cable is installed).
The Extron FOX 500 DA6 are two models of ultra-high performance 1-input, 6-output transmitting
distribution amplifers that send RGB video, audio, and RS-232 serial communications (such as for
projector control) across long distances over fiber optic cables. The two models are:
FOX 500 DA6 MM — A multimode (up to 150 m [492']) DA
FOX 500 DA6 SM — A singlemode (very long distance - up to 30 km [18.75 miles]) DA
The FOX 500 DA6 provides optical outputs to up to six FOX 500 (RGB) Rx and/or FOX 500 DVI Rx
receivers. The digital visual interface (DVI) receiver converts the proprietary signal received on the
optical cable to DVI video. The connected receivers can be a mix of RGB and DVI receivers. The
transmission mode version (multimode or singlemode) of the DA and all receivers must match.
The rack mountable FOX 500 DA6 units have internal power supplies that can accept 100-240 VAC,
at 50 to 60 Hz.
